Most commonly known as Cuervo Gold, this mass-market mixto tequila is the first tequila many people experience and is the number one selling tequila in the world. This mixto tequila is a blend of both blanco and reposado tequila and, of course, is not 100% agave.
TEQUILA MIXTO GOLD
DISTILLED FROM AT LEAST 51% BLUE WEBER AGAVE, THE REMAINING 49% CAN BE SUGARS (USUALLY CANE SUGAR). THEY ARE NOT AGED, BUT USE CARAMEL-COLORING TO PROVIDE THE GOLD COLOR. CAN BE BOTTLED OUTSIDE OF MEXICO.
“On the nose, this tequila offers a sharp alcohol burn, with very slight notes of orange peel and Confectioners’ sugar detectable. On the palate, a big hit of sugar and a strong alcohol burn dominate, with no agave notes present. As the flavors recede, a bitter, astringent herbal note appears, before a grapefruit and cracked black pepper finish leaves a strong alcohol note at the end. While the Cuervo distillery has a long history and produces some excellent tequilas at higher levels, Cuervo Gold is a disappointment and can only be recommended for cocktails that mask the flavors of this spirit.”
